Whitby Abbey, Abbey Lane, Whitby, YO22 4JT
The imposing structure of Whitby Abbey sits high above the Yorkshire fishing village of Whitby. It began life as a 7th-century Christian monastery that later became a Benedictine abbey. The abbey and its possessions were confiscated by the crown during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII. It also provided Bram Stoker with atmospheric locations for his Gothic novel, Dracula, and even provided the name for his famous vampire.
